The Philippine Peso

The Peso exists in many countries around the world through which the great Spanish explorers passed in their travels in the 15th and 16th centuries. Although most of their voyages led them to discover Latin American countries, there was one whose travels took him instead to the Far East: This was the Portuguese explorer, Fernando de Magellan. However, the archipelago of 7107 islands was quickly colonized by Spain.

The "Don Quixote of the Philippines" otherwise known as José Rizal was one of the key players in the revolution of the Philippines in the 19th century. It is he who figures on the 1, 5 and 10 peso coins. In 1996, to mark the anniversary of his death, they even printed the world's largest banknote measuring 36 x 21 cms: a 100,000 pesos bill (~ €1630).

On the upper side of the banknotes appear the images of various presidents and noted political personages, and on the back, historic scenes or well-known landmarks of the Philippines (government buildings, churches, and so on).

Like the word Pound in English, Peso means weight in Spanish and the Peso coin weighs exactly 27g. In the Philippines since 1967, both the country's coins and its banknotes have been issued in the Filipino language , and the term Peso has been changed to Piso.
